📝 Abstract

Soil physical properties can be affected by machines used for skidding which have the potential to impact soil sustainability and forest productivity. This study evaluated the effect on soil physical properties of skidding aspen (Populus deltoides Marsh.) with a Rubber tire skidder and farm tractor. The study site was located on in Hafdaghanan plantation region in north of Iran. Two treatments included rubber tire skidder HSM 904 and agricultural Tractor ITM285 equipped with trailer. The trails were delineated into three traffic classes primary, secondary and tertiary. Treatment effects were tested using analyses of variance (ANOVA) with skidding machine classes and traffic levels. Results indicated that machine type and traffic intensity are the effective factors on soil physical properties. The results showed that with increasing of traffic frequency, bulk density increased but total porosity and soil water content deceased. The study results provide clear evidence farm tractor is better skidding machine than rubber tire skidder in plantation area.
