📝 Abstract
Concrete durability has been a key issue for many years due to its high significance in the serviceability of concrete or reinforced concrete structures as well as to its tremendous economic impact in the construction sector. The engineering properties of concrete such as strength and durability are directly influenced and controlled by the number, type, size and distribution of pores present in the hardened cement paste. Thus, to determinate Concrete durability, we need to measure and have criteria for these factors. The best parameter which can represent these factors is concrete permeability. Also, Concrete and Structures deteriorations often occur because of penetration of harmful and destructive fluids into concrete that shows importance of concrete permeability. For Concrete permeability measurement there are various methods such as water, ions and gases permeability. After progresses in concrete technology and constructing high performance concretes with dense micro structures, it is time consuming and sometimes impossible to do permeability test with liquids, also the test specimen is changed during permeability test. So, nowadays it is more applicable to do permeability test with gases and specially oxygen. In this paper, it is tried to study gas permeability effective factors, different methods for its measuring, researches on relations between it and other durability effective parameters and methods, and criteria for determining concrete durability. At last, it is shown that gas permeability test of concrete is so rapid and doing the test with oxygen is preferable, also it is recommended to use CemBureau permeability method. Besides, there are appropriate relationships between gas permeability coefficient and other concrete durability parameters that indicate this method can be a proper criterion for concrete durability. Now, Iranian Building and Housing Research Center (BHRC) and Construction Material Institute (CMI) are working on a project to determine some criteria for concrete durability such as a criterion for gas permeability of concrete in Persian Gulf region.
