πŸ“ Abstract

The objective of this paper is to simulate the sediment yield due to runoff at the outlet of the Prata catchment (32.7 km2) located in northeast ParΓ‘ state, Amazon region, Brazil. The simulations were performed for six storms events using MUSLE – Modified Universal Soil Loss Equation (original version), and a calibrated version. The data required for the modelling were determined through runoff and sediment concentration monitoring at the moment of storm events, and field surveys were conducted in the small catchment. The results of the modelling showed that MUSLE in its original form does not estimate the suspended sediment loads well when compared with those measured at the outlet of the catchment. However, the calibrated version of the MUSLE satisfactorily estimated the load of suspended sediment. This demonstrated the applicability of the model to the study area for predicting sediment yield, despite the limited number of storm events analysed.
