📝 Abstract

Graft copolymer of gellan gum and polyacrylamide has been synthesized by microwave assisted method using a very low concentration of potassium persulphate as free radical initiator for the biosorption of Pb++ ions from aqueous solution. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and differential scanning colorimetry (DSC) were used to characterize the graft copolymer. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were used to illustrate the equilibrium data of Pb++ ions adsorption. The data fitted very well to the Langmuir isotherm model and sorption capacity was found to be 16.67 mg/g. Moreover, the kinetic of adsorption fitted well to the pseudo-second order model and the corresponding rate constants were determined. Spontaneous nature of Pb++ ions adsorption onto graft copolymer was supported by the negative value of the Gibbs free energy change (ΔGo). A metal capped structure was observed by SEM analysis after Pb++ ions biosorption.
